Resting

Hey there!
I don’t have any outfit posts this week. I have been sick these last few days and I haven’t gotten any better. I was not in the mood this weekend in doing outfit sessions so I decided to take the week off and focus on my healing. I’ve been drinking tea, soup, water and getting plenty of rest. Sometimes the body needs rest and that is exactly what  I am going to do. I am going to get plenty of rest this week and I hope to return next week with plenty of outfit posts.

Thank you,

XoXo, Karla

Wet-Look Joggers + Running Shoes = Athleisure

I’m actually glad that “Athleisure” is a thing now because I don’t look so out of place wearing leggings or sneaker’s while running errands. Before, Altheisure was a serious thing in the fashion world, I think we call partook in this, we just didn’t call it that. I use to call it, “house clothes” or errands clothes but it seems now there’s a whole industry/section of fashion/style that has been dedicated to this. I haven’t really purchased a lot of pieces dedicated solely for this because I have plenty of workout pieces to choose from. I did however, purchase these specifically for this because these are pretty freaking cool.

Outfit Details

As some of you may have realized, I don’t really shell out the big bucks for clothes because 80% of my closet is thrifted. I am very frugal when it comes to spending money on clothes but that’s not the case for my shoes. I splurge on shoes, especially if its running shoes. Running is my favorite form of cardio and I prefer to run outdoors, so I look for really comfortable, lightweight and durable shoes. These were my Christmas present, but I originally purchased the Nike Air Vapormax in the triple noir but after one gym session I had to return them because THEY were tight. I ended up returning them and exchanging them for the Nike Air VaporMax Utility, half size up and they were perfect. Since I’ve only worn them to the gym, I decided to wear them for a more casual look, so I paired them with these Nike wet-look joggers and this grey Banna Republic caged faux-leather sleeve top and black hoodie. I added a high messy pony tail and a nude lip to keep things casual.

Thrifted item: Banana Republic Top, purchased at local thrift store: $3.00

The Houndstooth Dress

Whenever I travel to a new city/town, I love to checkout the local thrift stores. When I went to Los Angeles last year, I stopped by a Goodwill in Hollywood and the American Apparel Flea Market, located in the same building as their manufacturing site. I felt like a child in a candy store because I love American Apparel and unfortunately, Charlotte does not have one. One of the pieces that I purchased there that day was this textured houndstooth dress, (sold out now) featured here. This is one of those timeless and versatile pieces that I will definitely remain in my closet for a few more years.

Outfit Details

I was inspired again by Mindy Lahiri from “The Mindy Project” with this outfit. Mindy wore a lot of shirts underneath her dresses that were different patterns, colors and textures and I really liked how her outfits turned out. When I decided to wear this outfit to work, I realized that I was going to need a shirt underneath it in order to make it more work appropriate. On a side note,  I wore black tights with this outfit to really make it work appropriate. I tried on several shirts but this Ann Taylor Peter Pan Pearl Collar was the best option for this out. It really stood out from just another plain white shirt. I threw on this beautiful Diane von Furstenberg coat I purchased on Poshmark for $30.00, my Steve Madden pointed black heels and a black purse to match.

Thrifted items: Purse, Vintage NO Brand, purchased at local thrift: $5.00

T H R E E M I X: The Fur Coat

I know every time I discuss a thrifted item, I claim that one to be my favorite. Truth is, I have way too many favorites! If I had to list my favorites, this coat probably makes it to the top 10. I purchased this coat at Goodwill for $8.00, practically a steal. I know wearing fur can be controversial but everyone is entitled to their opinions. I respect everyone’s choice as I hope you all respect mine.

If you flip through magazine covers, log onto to your favorite fashion site, scroll through your instagram feed or are shopping at your favorite clothing store, chances are you might come across faux-fur/fur coat. If you happen to pick one up from the hanger, at first glance they may seem intimidating. It might immediately trigger images of cocktail parties or posh parties; you might even try it on or you may immediately shove it back into the rack thinking, “you can’t pull this off”, “I don’t even have anything to wear this with”, “I don’t have anywhere to wear this to” or “I’m never going to wear this” moment but the truth is, these coats can worn just like any regular coat. Instead of pairing this coat with a fancy cocktail dress or skirt, I decided to showcase it with three bottoms. One with a pair of silk pants and two denim outfits. The silk pants outfit was for a cocktail evening, the pearl denim was worn to a Cancer Awareness Event and the last outfit was a “casual” Saturday look. Faux-Fur/Fur coats can be worn pretty much anywhere, however, do expect double takes.

Patent Paperbag Trousers

Right off the hanger these pants might get an “ewww” sound or “what in the…” comment followed by the, “who’s going to buy that?” statement. Me, this girl right here. I avoid Target like the plague because I can’t go in there for just one thing. I usually end up leaving with six different items that I did not intend on buying, knew that I needed and/or wanted, while of course, forgetting to buy what I actually walked in there for. On that usual Target trip, this happened. I was supposed to be buying only a moisturizer and I walked out with these pants. While I hurriedly sifted through the sale rack, I came across these pants, I quickly inspected them, threw them in my cart and purchased them (without trying them on).

Outfit Details

Once I got home, I tried them on and they fit like a glove. I was lucky enough to buy them at $10.99 in store but they are actually, $32.99 online (why?). So if you are interested in purchasing these, just stop by your local Target to see how much they have them for there. I will admit that these can be a bit intimidating because ALL eyes will be on you but once you have them, all those fears will go away. I wanted a simple chic outfit so I paired the pants with a silk ribbed tank top and for a little bit add more edginess ( or bad-assery) a pair of spiked Steve Madden heels.

Sweaterdress + Chunky boots

Outfit Details

These are my favorite kind of outfits; minimal effort required while looking effortlessly put together. Believe it or not, the first thing I did to put this look together were my tights and chunky boots. Once I had that on, I pulled this sweater dress out of my closet and floppy fedora hat. I threw on my coat and I was out the door. I kept it simple by wearing a nude lip and using my coats pockets as a purse. I hope you are all enjoying your Friday and Happy weekend!

Oversized Denim Jacket + Leather Pants

I love anything oversized because that means I can wrap my body around it and be cozy all day long. I will admit though this is not  my denim jacket, I actually borrowed it from my husband. Although, I have officially reclaimed it (purchased it at Goodwill for him for $5.00) so the jury’s out on who really owns it now, lol.

Outfit Details

I wanted an all black look because black dominates the winter season. Yes, there’s the dark hues of purple, green, red, orange etc but there’s something so badass about an all black outfit. I like to mix fabrics and love the look of different textures mixed together; for this outfit I mixed wool, leather and denim. At first, I put this outfit together with just the leather pants and boots because I loved how the pants and booties elongated my legs and made this outfit look badass. Since I wanted an all-black look I added this black turtleneck sweater vest and long-sleeve shirt underneath. Once I put the outfit together I knew something was missing to really make this outfit look together. That’s when I saw it staring back at me, my husband shooting this outfit with his denim jacket. I unapologetically asked him to remove his jacket and to hand it over; sorry not sorry.

T H R E E M I X = The Chunky Turtleneck

Winter styling can be difficult because you want to stay warm but  you want to look fashionable/stylish at the same damn time. That is why I wanted to style a winter staple: the Chunky Sweater. Chunky sweaters are an absolute must during the winter season and weather you like a crew neck, v-neck, cowl neck or turtleneck sweater, you probably have one in your closet. When it comes to styling them, they’re usually an afterthought because we associate them with comfort and not for an evening out or even office wear. So here are the three (well four) different ways I styled this sweater.

P.S. Now that I have more blog content, I am going to try to post the Threemix segment at least every other week.

Fringe Frill Jeans + Pom Pom Heels

Wearing open toe heels in the winter is probably not a great idea but I still can’t help myself. To fix that, I decided I was going to wear socks with them but of course, my socks provided zero warmth. I know socks and heels are usually a hit, miss or don’t do it for some but I personally like the look. I’ve worn socks with my outfits a few times and although it doesn’t feel like I’m wearing a pair of Uggs, it at least prevents my toes from freezing.

Outfit Details

This is probably one of my favorite sweaters and thrifted finds. I love the way this sweater fits and what I happen to love the most, is its age. There isn’t much left of the tag but if I had to take a guess, I am going to say it’s probably from the eighties. I wanted a fun outfit to wear but still be able to keep warm. So I paired the sweater with these fringe jeans, pom pom heels (cause they’re so winter) and my fishnet socks. Of course the sweater alone wasn’t going to keep me warm so I threw on my fur coat thrifted from Goodwill for only $8.00. I love the way this outfit turned out because it’s exactly what I wanted, something fun and easy to wear while bringing some sunshine to the season.
