Silk Wrap Blouse + Velvet Culottes

Fashion Rule: If you’re 5’4″ and under, NEVER wear Culottes, A-line Skirts or anything that stops right above your ankles.  Rules are meant to be broken.

There’s this huge misconception in the fashion world that people under 5’4″ should avoid clothing that stops at our ankles because it will make us look short or as if the “outfit is wearing us.” While, this is true. If done right, you CAN wear such pieces if you’re 5’4″ and under; you just need to know how to do it. I’m no expert, believe me. However, speaking as someone that happens to be 5’4″, I know all too well about what works and what doesn’t. Whenever I do wear pieces that sit just above my ankles, I usually do the following:

  1. I make sure the skirt/pants sit right above my waist and tuck the blouse in.
  2. Since I’m small chested, I can get away with blouses that have ruffles etc. but I make sure that the design doesn’t swallow my waist as this is the area that I want to accentuate.  However, I usually stick to a top that’s fitted and that I can easily tuck in.
  3. I usually wear pumps/stilettos and avoid shoes that wrap around my ankles. I never wear boots because it really does shrink me. However, I have seen short women pull this off effortlessly; it just doesn’t work for me.
  4. Avoid things that will make me look frumpy and shorter than what I really am.

However, I will say this: YOU have to know your body – what works and what doesn’t. In the end, wear whatever the hell makes you happy!

“Fashion is about dressing according to what is fashionable. Style is more about being yourself.” – Oscar De La Renta

Outfit Details

Now that we’re done breaking rules, let’s talk about today’s outfit. That top was actually a steal because I bought it at Goodwill for $3.49 BRAND NEW WITH TAGS. (My gut feeling tells me that this was purchased from The Limited’s liquidation sale from last year and since items were final sale and you could not return them, the buyer donated it to Goodwill. Why do I think that? There were a ton of The Limited items at Goodwill that day, lol.) Anyway, back to the outfit.  Originally when I purchased it, I thought I was going to wear it with jeans but when I saw my velvet culottes, mind changed. I love playing with different textures and patterns and mixing these two together really made the outfit stand out. This top is the perfect cocktail dress replacement. You don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort because you can still be a standout with this piece.

I’m a huge fan of navy and black combination and this was the perfect outfit to mix those two colors with. I accessorized with a black and pink clutch; I just loved the pop of color. The shoes were another steal: $1.39 at the Goodwill Outlet O_O BRAND NEW! These were the perfect evening shoes for the perfect evening and I didn’t have to sacrifice comfort.

LACE SKATER DRESS

When I purchase clothes, I make it my goal to wear it more than once. I bought this red dress back in February for valentines day but I have not worn it since. It’s a beautiful dress but its just not the piece I can wear to say, the grocery store, shopping or the movies. The dress is very “romantic” so I wanted to give it edgyness by wearing it with black accessories. The lace-up heels add the perfect amount of “attitude” that I wanted to give this dress. I side swept my hair to finish up the look.

Karla.

Weekend Adventures

I have to admit but this was one of my favorite shoots! I technically broke the law for this shoot but that depends from what law or legal stand point you are looking at this from. However, the important part is that I was able to take these amazing photos at this amazing location.

The outfit details are simple. Black pants, striped pants and black loafers. The top was thrifted and it was only $4.50 (score).

Enjoy them!

An Early Welcome To Spring

Spring is around the corner ( 10 days away actually) for a lot of those that live north of the border. For those of us that are fortunate enough to live in warm states, spring has actually been around since like December, since our “winters” are more like spring weather. I wanted a look that would welcome spring in open arms and what better way to say “hi!” than in pastels. I am actually looking forward to spring since it is my favorite season!

Outfit Details

This gorgeous dress was actually purchased at Goodwill and I love everything about it. It is a form fitting dress that accentuates my curves nicely and the color really compliments my skin. The coat was another Goodwill find that I am absolutely in love because of its beautiful embroidery detail. The biggest splurge here was the shoes. Although, the term “splurge” I use loosely since the shoes were only $60 ( about 50% off retail ). I wanted to add a bit of shimmer and contrast to this outfit and that is why I did wore these shoes with it. I think the gold accent with the pastel is definitely a nice mixture.

Outfit total: $67.00

  • Dress: $3.00
  • Coat: $4.00
  • Shoes: $60.00

P.S. – A huge shout out to Aliyah Coll who did my makeup for this outfit & my patient boyfriend for taking a million shots of one outfit.

The Monday Blues – Denim on Denim

I am finally back in town and on my computer! Yay! Life without the internet is hard people!!! Ok, I’m done with the exclamation points. I am happy that I am back in the comfort of my home but sadly I am not 100% settled in. I have to unpack ( I did some serious shopping at the Outlet Malls) and do some serious catching up on school work. Today’s outfit is simple and to the point. I wore denim on denim today and added a bit of chic by wearing gold accents ( shoes, watch etc…).What I love about this outfit is that it is simple and chic – this is definitely one of those laid back easy going outfits.

Valentines Day – a bit late

Valentine’s Day happens to be one of my favorite “holidays”; and I say “holiday” because we all know that it has become be to known as a corporate holiday. I knew that this year I wanted to wear a red dress so I searched the internet for the perfect red dress. I like the dresses that H&M had to offer so I went to the store and tried on every single red dress they had in store. After I spent about 40 minutes in the fitting room I had narrowed it down to this red ( the one shown) dress or this one. I loved how red flared dress looked on the rack but when I put it on….OH NO! The dress looked horrible and let’s just say the sizing was WAAAAYYYY off.

The Details

Once I selected my dress I knew that I wanted to wear pink accessories. I bought these amazing pink shoes from Poshmark ( an app that lets you sell your clothes!) and I matched it with this gorgeous clutch I bought at goodwill for $2.50. I was really going for the sweet romantic look and I think I nailed it. The weather that night was unseasonable cold so I was able to show off my wonderful beige ( $1.00) coat.

Wynwood Street Art. Side note: The headlights reflect on my shirt; too fxking cool!

Happy Saturday loves!

If you are ever in Miami, FL (not South Beach, because those are actually two different cities) you have to make sure to make a pit stop in Wynwood a.k.a Design District and check out the sick art there. There is soooo many cool art around the neighborhood that you might just want to take a picture of it. However, make sure you do so soon. Unfortunately, because of the heavy construction, commercialization and retailers that have opened in the area, several of the art galleries in the neighborhood are moving :(.  Hopefully the street art remains but that is still to be determined.

The Outfit Details:

It was a tank-top and jeans kinda day for me. I did have an early start so I pulled out the jacket but honestly by the afternoon it was a warm 84 degrees. However, by the evening it’s set to be “cool” so I’ll keep the jacket with me, just in case I need it. I added the shoes for a an extra “kick in my step” and because I practically use any excuse to wear leopard. However, this is one of those outfits that you can pretty much wear just about any pair of shoes and the outfit will still look good.

Total Cost of this Outfit $94

  • Top $4
  • Jeans $4
  • Wool Coat $4
  • Shoes $82 (On Sale)

Target Midi Dress

Target Midi Dress

Target Midi Dress

Hello Loves,

Today I bring you the midi dress I got at Target for $17.99 on clearance! Yes, ladies and gentlmen off the rack ( if we can say this considering target’s clothes are already cheap). I have to admit though, I did buy the dress about a size too big but it was the last one and I just couldn’t help myself; besides, it doesn’t fit too big so I’ll have it taken in. This is a very comfortable dress and I am surprised I did not see it before; either way, I am glad I didn’t because I got it for a very small amount. I also splurged on another few items while at Target. I was able to find the python pencil skirt from the Altuzarra collection for $10.58 and the sheer bow tie top for $8.99 ( score)!

Fierce!

Fall Colors paired nicely with florals.

The Outfit

I had been on the hunt for the perfect Midi dress and this one fit the bill. I love the material of the dress, it’s not “bandage” where it hugs every nook and cranny that you want to hide, it actually hugs your curves and hides the “love handles” lol. The print is the second reason why I wanted this dress. I love a good floral print and I love it even more if I can wear the print and/or piece year round. I accessorized with a pair of oxblood shoes because I wanted that color to stand out from the floral print and paired it with a nice blush bag. I kept the jewelry to a minimum because you don’t really much when the dress is this gorgeous.

Total cost of this outfit: $122.99

  • Dress $17.99
  • Shoes $20.00 (On Sale)
  • Bag: $80 (On Sale)
  • Sunglasses: $5.00

Easy Sunday

Sunday, the day that we should take time off from our busy schedules and rest. For me, it was an easy going morning and afternoon. I went to a Seafood Festival where the food was YUUUUMMMM ! Of course if you grow up you on the coast or in an island, you either  learn to love or loath seafood. In my case, I love seafood! I can’t get enough of it. The boyfriend and I had an easy afternoon of walking, snapping pics and eating. Now, it’s time for reality and homework it is. I have two semesters to go before graduation and plan on passing every single class left in my curriculum. I am ready lord!

This is an easy outfit, not much that I did to make it stand out as the color is a stand out all on its own. I paired it with strappy, beige/off white ruffled sandals (BTW thrifted brand new with tags at Goodwill for $5.00!) and a vintage cross body ( not shown) Dooney & Bourke bag. I kept my face bare with a bit of gloss and natural eyeshadow.

Hope you all had a fantastic Sunday.

“Fall”

SONY DSCSONY DSCSONY DSC

Ok, so today was a rather strange day. We got “fall” like weather in Miami and I must admit, I was one happy camper. Finally, we have opened our doors to a cool breeze, very low humidity and a “feather weight” chill. It was perfect.

Since the weather was soooo lovely today, the weather inspired my outfit. I decided to sport these black legging jeans from the gap, liquid chunky boots from the gap and a green top I bought at my local Marshall’s. The outfit was cool enough for the breeze but light enough for the heat. If there is one amazing things about this city, is that you need to learn how to dress for it. Our winters are extremely mild (snowbirds don’t even call them winters) and our summers are very hot. I topped this look by picking up my hair and a bold oxford blood lip. I wanted my outfit to represent the dark colors of fall.
